Goldfield Ghost Town

So this is Goldfield.

At seven in the early morning, I found out that this is the way to see a ghost town.

All by yourself.

All I was there for was to get a better shot of the snow on Superstition.  But this was neat.  I walked around being the only person there.

I think that building with the round dome was the . . .uhhh . . . .  'soiled doves' home.  Or 'ladies of the evening'.

Who knows.   I'm doubting that this was a real brothel.  This was just a rough old mining town in the 1890's with more saloons that anything else.  Although, could be, I guess.

There's a book called 'Soiled Doves'  that about women in these kind of towns who were prostitutes in those days.  It's actually kinda of a sad read.  Those poor ladies.  The diseases - the lack of proper nutrition - the treatment they got from men - the complete low self images they had of themselves.  I didn't think I'd come out of that book feeling as sorry for them as I did.   Very hard life then.

Some people were up, though.  Those early morning chores  do call.

  3. Hi Roe!

You are pretty brave to go to a ghost town all by yourself . . . actually, that's something I would totally do!! What fun pictures! The "Ladies" tower is very unique - can't even imagine what kind of life they must have had, very sad, it was probably the only thing they knew...

    Fun trip!

    Hugs,
    Barb

  4. early am is my favorite time to view any or everything. i much prefer these shots with no people. people ruin pics and i love this ghost town, something new on my bucket list... great shots. women were treated horribly back then, they were owned by their husbands and it was ok to beat them. women with no man were treated really bad... i love the old west but am glad i did not live then.

  6. I am surprised there was not a caretaker living in this little "ghosttown". If you want to see how the Soiled Doves were treated back in those days, I think the HBO series Deadwood can give you a fairly honest look at that.

    Cheers,
    Jo
