Lots of quail and an intruder

I stopped at this spot on the Apache Trail when I was out there.  There was a museum and a church and quails, quails, and more quails.

And a cardinal.

That pretty little guy would fly into the midst of them and quickly fly out again and wait for another opportunity.   I don't know whether the quail were pushing him out or what.

This was early in the morning.  A caretaker had just thrown some food around when I was there.  It was fun watching the quail swarm around getting their free breakfast.   When he threw the seeds out there, quail came running from every point in the surrounding desert to get their fair share.

Sorry about the pics.  They aren't that good.  But you get the idea.

  2. Goodness, these quail look so much like Mourning Doves! It is so strange seeing the cardinal in the middle of them!

  3. Oh how that little red Cardinal stands out... Wonder if he felt out-of-place---or was he the 'leader' of the pack????? ha

    Great photos.

  6. Lots and lots of quail to be sure. Goldfield Ghost Town can be a fun distraction and a place to take out of town guests for the afternoon, but after one or two visits, it seems to be mostly an over-priced tourist trap. hope you have a great week. Thanks for sharing these pictures. I think I need to get out there and doing some hiking in the Superstitions over spring break!
